History

Silver is mentioned in the Bible. Royalty carried water in silver vessels in the belief that this water would help them maintain their health. In ancient Greece, eating and drinking vessels were lined with silver. Pioneers in the American West would put a silver item such as a coin or ring in milk to help keep it fresh when they didn't have refrigeration. Have you ever wondered why, years ago, eating utensils were made from silver? One of the properties of silver is that, like gold; it kills bacteria within minutes of contact. These medical properties may be the reason why gold and silver were first used as a valued currency.

Silver was used as a proven germ fighter in the early 1900's. It was the mainstay of antibiotic treatment. The medical journal Lancet reported phenomenal results from colloidal silver in 1914. Dr. Henry Crooks showed colloidal silver to be highly germicidal, yet absolutely harmless and non-toxic to humans.

Colloidal silver has been proven useful against all species of fungi, bacteria, protozoa, parasites and certain viruses, which are often killed within minutes. Larry C. Ford, MD at the UCLA School of Medicine reported in 1988 that silver solutions were effective against Streptococcus, Pyogenes, Staphylococcus Aures, Neisseria, Gonorrhea, Garnerella, Vaginalis, Salmonella, Typhi and other enteric pathogens. He also found that it was fungicidal for Candida Albicans, Candida Globata and M. Furfur.

Science Digest reported in an article in 1978, entitled "Our Mightiest Germ Fighter" that "silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine". Usually, an antibiotic kills a half dozen or so bacteria, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains do not develop to silver like they do with antibiotics. Dr. Richard L. Davies says "We're just beginning to see to what extent silver can relieve suffering and save lives. In four years we've described 87 important new medical uses for silver". In the Body Electric Dr. Robert O. Becker, recognized a correlation between low silver levels and sickness. He claims silver deficiency is responsible for the improper functioning of the immune system. Dr. Becker's experiments conclude that silver works on the full spectrum of pathogens without any side effective or damage to the body. He also states that silver does more than kill disease causing organisms, it also causes major growth stimulation of injured tissues. Burn patients and even elderly patients notice more rapid healing with silver application. According to Dr. Becker, all strains of pathogens resistant to other antibiotics are killed by the silver element. He even discovered that it can change cancer cells back to normal! From his extensive experiments with silver in medicine, Dr.Becker concluded: "What we have actually done was rediscover the fact that silver killed bacteria, which had been known for centuries , when antibiotics were discovered, clinical uses for silver were discarded."

Production Methods

Many methods were used to produce colloids in the early 1900's. The grind process and the electro-colloidal processes were most commonly used. The main drawback of the grind method is that the silver particles are so large that they settle to the bottom of the solution and much of the value of the colloid is lost. To offset this problem, some manufacturers add a "stabilizer". By doing so, the silver particles tend to settle to the bottom much more slowly. Typically, the "stabilizer" used is a protein. The use of stabilizers tends to disturb the charge on the silver particles, thereby blocking their action and reducing the effectiveness. A true colloid does not require an artificial stabilizer or additive of any kind. In recent years, the chemical process has been widely employed to replace the grind method. The chemical method provides a convenient shortcut, but it too falls short of the superior quality of "true" colloidal silver. The problem with using chemicals to produce colloids is the difficulty in getting them back out of the solution. These are powerful acid solutions which can cause negative side effects to the consumer.

The use of chemicals may affect the overall pH of the solution. Typically, a chemically produced silver colloid is quite acidic, having a pH of 4.5-5.5 while a true colloid of silver has a pH in the range of 6.5. The electro-colloidal process allows extremely fine silver particles to be suspended in solution by the electrical charge on the particles. If done properly, this method replaces the need for any chemicals, stabilizers or proteins, thus the product can be called a "true" colloid of silver. Particle size is a critical factor. Much of the efficacy of the colloidal solution depends on the actual size and uniformity of silver particles. Particles that are too large may cause harm by lodging in the fine lining of the digestive tract and cause scar tissue to form. The preferred particle size for optimum results and safety of use should be from 0.005-0.015 microns in diameter. In a "true" colloid, silver particles are animated by what is known as Brownian Motion and remain in suspension indefinitely.
